My grandmother, born Aline Smalls, grew up in San Francisco. She was
still living at home during the 1906 quake. Her father, from the
Alsace-Lorraine region of France, was a chef at the Cliff House at
that time. She remembered that after the quake, several times a
week, fresh produce, bread, etc appeared on the doorstep. The family
was sure it was provided by the Cliff House's purveyors to make sure
they were taken care of during that difficult period.
I do not recall what she said about whether he returned to the Cliff
House after it was rebuilt.
