Use of Images

This website opens with the following statement...

"The goal of this website is to preserve the visual imagery of Adolph Sutro’s Victorian Cliff House"

So when I'm asked for permission to use images from the website, I would love to answer yes, unconditionally, but it's not that simple.  I don't own all of these images.  Many are owned by others who generously allowed me to include them on the website.  Some are collectors like myself, others make a living in the publishing industry.  So for those requesting permission to use images from this website, I offer the following general guidelines...

All images fall into one of four categories:

  1. Images owned by me...those you are free to use.  These are typically uncredited.

  2. Images owned by someone else...typically credited in the caption or at the top of the page.  For those images you would need permission from the owner.  In some cases the owner may have already stipulated a usage policy.  This would typically be at the top of the page.  If the owner's name is a hyperlink, following the link may also lead to a page with their usage policy.

  3. Images from mass produced media:  postcards, stereoviews, newspaper clippings.  In most cases these images have copyrights that expired long ago, HOWEVER I am not a copyright lawyer and it is YOUR responsibility to determine the copyright status of such images.

  4. Images that I "borrowed" without permission (libraries, etc).  Obviously I can't grant you permission since I don't own them.

So for those seeking permission to use images from this website, I'm happy to review your requests, but first do your own homework using the above guidelines.  I make no money from this website and I just can't afford the time to do all the footwork for you.

One last note...when asking for permission to use an image, please don't refer to it as "the picture of the lady with the funny hat".  Instead refer to it by URL, like this...
